‘OM’ is sometimes written and pronounced as ‘AUM’.

The sound of ‘AUM’ symbolizes the primordial vibration (i.e. the sound of creation).

It’s the universe’s most fundamental form of existence.
Believed to be pulsating energy, known as ‘vibrations’.

Every ‘thing’ (living and non-living) that we see or feel is a vibration, including our bodies, the organs and our emotions.

1. What is Aum (OM) made of?

Three sounds made of syllable ‘A-U-M

These sounds stand for three significant triads – awareness, speech, and action; the three qualities of matter – goodness, passion, and darkness; and the three sacred Vedic texts – Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Samaveda.

Let’s understand the connection between the sound, Creator, its connection to the body and its aspects:

Sound Connection to CreationConnection to the BodyAspects of the Body
    ‘A’ invokesBrahmaPhysical world
(a waking state or conscious state of mind)
    Soul the past, present, future
    ‘U’ invokesVishnuEmotions
(a dreaming state or unconscious state of mind)
    Energies creation, conservation, transformation
‘M’ invokesShivaDeepest layers of the mind
    (the deep sleep state)
    Spirit immortality, omniscience, elation

Let’s understand aspects of creation, its nature and the significance:

    Aspects of CreationNatureSignificance
    BrahmaCreatorwithout which nothing exists
Vishnu Preserverwith which everything is sustained
ShivaDestroyerall things dissolve back into the void

Beyond these three states is the SILENCE that follows.

    2. Benefits of Om Chanting

The vibrational frequency of Om promotes:

    • Inner peace and harmony
    • Self-awareness
    • Calm state of mind
    • Mindfulness
Thus preparing us to go deeper with meditation practices

Feeling of Inter-Connectedness: Chanting Aum can help you connect to every ‘thing’, thus creating a sense of belonging and realization. Like you’re a part of something big.

Connect to deeper levels of your physical self | Opens-up Sinuses | Clears Skin: The vibrations of the sound ‘m’ in the nasal area can lead to clearing any blockages in the airway.

Mental Boost: It’s like a cup of coffee for your mind – gets you up and attentive!

Health Tonic for the Body: The ‘A’ starts from the base of your navel creating vibrations that can boost your immunity and digestion. ‘U’ generating from the centre of the ribcage up to the centre of the heart strengthens your heart muscles and  spine, improves the posture, and reduce back pain. ‘M’ generating from base of the throat up to the top of the head relieves  sinuses, stimulates throat and pituitary gland.

      3. Effects of Aum Chanting

Om chanting is a journey to connect deeper to the primordial vibration if only practiced consistently.

Interestingly, group chanting amplifies the effects by producing immense positive vibrations, charging the universe. Tuning into this frequency helps us connect with ourselves and the universe on deeper levels, creating a sense of belonging.

But the magic comes after the chanting!

The greatest yogis recommend to | pause at the end of your chanting | sit in silence | experience that creative void | witness the calm of ‘AUMthrough the body

By now, we know that the vibrations connect the entire universe!

      4. How to Prepare for the Chant

Comfortable cross-legged sitting posture, tall spine.

Step 1: Sit in Comfortable Posture
Sitting comfortably on the floor with or without support in a cross-legged position on the seating bones with a tall spine, stomach tucked in, shoulders rolled out, chin parallel to the floor, palms on the thighs, facing upwards, elbows relaxed, soft focus at a point at your eye level (eyes closed or open is your choice)
Step 2: Take a few deep breaths, tuning your attention inwards.
Step 3: Hold awareness at the crown of the head, or the third eye (between the brows).
Step 4: Exhale completely. Inhale again.
Step 5: As you exhale start chanting ‘A-U-M’…

      5. How It Generates in the Body

A’ generates from the root chakra & emphasized at the solar plexus chakra, near the diaphragm, with sound moving up,
U’ sustains through the heart chakra, emphasized at throat chakra,
M’ is generated from the base of the throat chakra moving through the third eye chakra – the sound dissolves at the crown chakra.

      6. How Many Times to Chant Om?

You can chant Aum any number of times. 3, 21, or ideally 108 times is recommended.

As per Vedic texts, 108 times is the most effective, since it is connected to the chakras or energy centers in our body. It brings in harmony with the vibrations of the universe. The number ‘108’ to represent the completeness of the presence

If not 108 times, then chant 21 times to purify and clarify the five organs of action, the five organs of perception, the five vital airs, and the five sheaths. This prepares the human being for merger with the Divine.

If not 21 times, then at least 3 times to connect to the three worlds of earth, atmosphere, and heaven

      7. How are Chakras connected

      8. FAQs

      a) Why is Om chanting powerful?

The vibration produced by AUM chanting represents the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe, thus aligning our body, mind, and spirit with cosmic energies

            b) Can I chant Om anytime?

The ideal time to chant Om is 6am, 12pm, or 6pm, this is known as Sandhya kal (dawn & dusk) or an auspicious time.

Often chanted at the beginning and end of meditation practices

              c) How to correctly chant Om?

Before you begin AUM chanting, do pranayama for some time and then the AUM chant is so much clearer and more powerful; as it helps in the free flow of Prana

The key to aum chanting correctly is to break the sound into 3 parts

The first (A) is with mouth open, the middle (U) is with mouth halfway closed and the last (M) is mostly made from inside, with mouth almost fully closed.

Start focusing on your Mooladhara chakra, as you just begin with the A, and then as you stretch the U, take it along each chakra and end M at the Sahasrara. Take a pause, and start again.
