Did you know?
Most of the candles today, are made from paraffin/soy wax added with artificial dye colours and scents. And citric acid to increase the burning time of the candles. Also, don’t forget the wicks that contain heavy metals like lead.
What is paraffin wax?
Paraffin is a by product of crude oil, which when lit emits invisible smoke which is as harmful as sitting in a room with smoke from diesel engine, indoors. Imagine the amount of toxins released in your air indoors with the paraffin wax alone. Other added chemicals to make the candles smell fancy is even more deadly!
Are we also considering the wastage that comes along with lighting those tiny-miny fancy looking candles?
- The aluminum/plastic containers that they come in.
- The metal plate, that is used to hold the wick.
- All the plastic/paper packaging
Is there a more ecological & reusable alternate? Yes – Beeswax candles!
- Beeswax is a natural wax produced by youngest worker bees of genus ‘Apis’. Once the Queen Honey bee migrates from the comb, beekeepers extract the honey & cut off the wax caps from each honey comb cell.
- Beeswax is the foundation of the hive. Bees build their comb from beeswax & fill the hexagonal cells with honey & brood.
Benefits of beeswax have stood for centuries : It can be reused as it doesn’t evaporate!
- Purifies indoor air naturally – How?
Lit candle pulls toxins from the air. Negative ions bind to the toxins & help in purifying your indoor air. A perfect example of this act of purifying air is – A Rainstorm. It’s a -ve event, which is why air smells so fresh, afterwards.
